Blackjack

Blackjack is a deceptively simple card game that you play against the dealer. Your goal is that the face value of your cards would be higher than the dealer’s without going over 21. Aces can be played high or low, but when you change an ace from high to low, you have to leave it there. Numbered cards are counted according to their face value, while the face cards are worth 10. Suits don’t matter.

Video Blackjack is harder to beat than live Blackjack due to the rules usually used in video Blackjack. Live Blackjack will usually pay 3:2 for “naturals” which are hands with an ace and a face card or 10. Live Blackjack pays 1:1 for other hands that win. Video Blackjack usually pays out 1:1 for any winning hand, even a natural. While the math is complicated, the net result is that the extra half of a bet you don’t get in video Blackjack adds well over 2% to the house edge.

In video Blackjack you are often restricted to doubling down only with hands totaling 10 or 11. Doubling down means that you double your bet before you receive a third card. This restriction also adds to the house edge. And in video Blackjack the “deck” is reshuffled after every hand, which means that counting cards is impossible. Of course, officially you’re not allowed to count cards in live Blackjack either, so it shouldn’t really matter.

Video Blackjack usually has a small minimum, like $1, whereas live Blackjack often has a table minimum of $10 or $15. Therefore, if you want to bet small, the video game is better. Taking everything into account, the house edge is about 2% higher in video Blackjack than in live Blackjack.

In live Blackjack in casinos you can find single deck games that pay 1:1 for naturals and you can find multi-deck games paying 3:2. The latter is preferable because the probability for a natural is only slightly smaller in multi-deck games and the payout is much better. You should only play single deck Blackjack games if they pay out 3:2, but they are hard to find.

Although there is a mathematical strategy for Blackjack called “basic strategy”, it takes a while to learn. If you want to play Blackjack well, you should learn it. But if you are just starting and want some simple instructions, there are a few basics. If your initial hand has a total of 12 to 16, it is called a “stiff” hand, meaning you can bust with just one hit. That means that if the dealer’s face up card is a two through a six, the dealer has a stiff hand.

If you have 17, you should declare it a “pat” hand and stand; don’t ask for any more cards. If the dealer is showing anything from a seven to an ace, consider it a pat hand and base your move on that.

If both you and the dealer have stiff hands, stand, but if you have a stiff hand and the dealer has a pat hand, hit. While this strategy isn’t enough to help you really excel at Blackjack, it’s better than playing based on just a hunch.
